East of Somes Sound

The East Side

East of Somes Sound rise the island’s highest summits — Cadillac, Dorr, Champlain — and the densest web of old paths. Much of it was built by the Bar Harbor Village Improvement Association, whose path committee Waldron Bates chaired from 1900 to 1909, adding some twenty-five miles of trail.
